    What is Kapok?

    Kapok:

The kapok fibers come from the fruit of the kapok tree, which grows wild in the tropical regions of Asia and are neither fertilized nor sprayed. The 1.5 cm - 4 cm long fibers are not treated any further after harvesting, are not washed or chemically "refined" and are therefore a purely natural and 100% ecological product . Kapok is a fruit fiber, similar to cotton, but it is 50% lighter and is also known as plant down or plant silk.

Kapok is a natural fiber that comes from the so-called silk wool tree. In the kapok pod, the kapok seed is surrounded by silky, shiny fibers that are intended to protect it in a similar way to cotton, although kapok fibers are water-repellent . Unlike cotton fiber, kapok does not absorb water or other moisture and is therefore buoyant, which, like the coconut palm, has contributed to the spread of the kapok tree and made kapok the traditional filling material for life jackets and lifebuoys.

Kapok filling material is also used for bedding such as kapok pillows and upholstery. The kapok fiber is very soft and light, hollow on the inside, voluminous and surrounded by a wax layer on the outside, which is why it is very smooth and has a silky shine . Kapok fibers weigh only a fraction of cotton and are the lightest fibers known . In addition, kapok fibers are extremely heat-retaining and insulating due to the inclusion of air. Its breathable properties make it easier to release excess body heat into the environment, thus preventing night sweats. In addition, moisture is not absorbed by the wax coating of kapok, but is passed on directly, which can prevent the spread of bacteria and mites.

    What is kapok suitable for?

The water-repellent structure and chemical composition provide another advantage : Kapok is not attacked by moths and does not provide a breeding ground for fungi and germs, which are the prerequisite for dust mite infestation. Kapok consists of around 20% lignin, which is also found in wood and ensures stability and durability , but contains little cellulose (35% compared to 95% in cotton), which is used by many fungi and small animals.

    Current use of kapok

Before the use of foams, kapok (especially in colonial times it was naturally available and therefore widespread) was the upholstery material of choice, but then fell more and more into oblivion until it was rediscovered due to the excellent kapok fiber properties and its sustainability (the silk wool tree is also ideal for reforestation as it was the first to settle on wasteland).
